Something Is Out There was a mini-series that was followed by an unsuccessful TV series. Dealing with a police detective and an alien woman who investigate a range of paranormal crimes, it was very similar to The X Files and the Nightstalker.

The Invaders is a 60's science fiction series which originally ran for three seasons. The first episode was aired January 10th 1967 and the last, March 26th 1968. The series revolves around the character of David Vincent, who has discovered that the Earth is being invaded by beings from another planet. Some special movies

"Zombies of the Stratosphere," which co-starred a young Leonard Nimoy as an alien bent on conquering the Earth. You have to look back with a smile on your face when you consider they used ordinary guns to battle the Earthlings. But, they arrived in a high tech spaceship, complete with picture phones.
I have an original one sheet from the serial on my wall at home.

The Twilight 'Zine
by Jack Hayslett

Science Fiction Movies of the 50's

Every time I drive by an old Drive-In Movie site or an old Theater, I am reminded of the many "B" movies that played during my childhood. The ones I liked best had to do with flying saucers. Most were shown as part of a double feature, and included cartoons.
Do you remember the "buck nights" when the whole carload got in for one low price?
My family took advantage of this special frequently. We parked our old station wagon backwards, so we could put the tailgate down and watch the movie laying-down. Or, we could choose to sit outside on benches next to the projection booth. The smell of the goodies at the snack bar induced us to want to eat and drink and.... Much of the time we would bring our own food, like mom's fried chicken, soda (Hekelnkaemper's Orange Bubble was and still is my favorite) and a big bag of popcorn. Naturally, we kids wanted something from the snack bar, too.
It was actually at the old Madrid Theater in Atchison  (with rats running across your feet) that I found a liking for sci-fi.
Early in the 20th century, Jules Verne stirred the imagination with books about fantastic adventures. Some of those books spoke of the Earth, the Moon and creatures from outer space. When I started watching this new and most often scary stuff, the Sci-Fi craze was barely upon us.
The very first film I saw was "The Thing,"starring James Arness (Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke fame) as a gigantic cabbage man who had crashed his flying saucer in the Arctic, and the Army Air Force found him in a large block of ice. When the Thing thawed out he ravaged the polar post, killing sled dogs and any other creature in his path.
It was the trip home after the movie that literally scared me to death. When I walked home, all the shadows were concealing the huge green man. As I sprinted home up Ninth Street, I ran from light post to light post on alternate sides of the street, to keep out of the dark shadows. Boy, how I wished mom or dad would come along to snatch me into the car and deliver me from this evil.
Actually, I had first loved the serials playing at all theaters in Atchison. These included 12 to 15 chapter episodes that kept us on the very edge of our seats. One of my very best memories is of the serial "Zombies of the Stratosphere," which co-starred a young Leonard Nimoy as an alien bent on conquering the Earth. You have to look back with a smile on your face when you consider they used ordinary guns to battle the Earthlings. But, they arrived in a high tech spaceship, complete with picture phones.
By the way, I now have an original one sheet from the serial on my wall at home. And, I have the video.
I recently started collecting movie posters and videos of old classic movies, mostly those dealing with flying saucers.
Before the advent of "The Thing," I made weekly trips to the Orpheum or the Madrid or the new Fox theaters for exciting serials.
Other serials that I just couldn't miss every week included Republic Pictures' "King of the Rocket Men," "Flying disc Man from Mars" and "Radar Men from the Moon."
Columbia hit it big in the '40's, and brought these classics back again and again. Kind of like Disney brings back movies every few years or so. There was 'Batman', 'Superman' (with Kirk Alyn) and 'Atom Man vs. Superman'. Later a couple of Reeves boys would become the mild mannered reporter who could change into Superman in a blink of the eye. George Reeves was the 50's star of TV. Christopher Reeves made a hit out of Superman again.  Universal Pictures scored big with 'Ace Drummond', not a sci-fi flick, but one that took place at a monastery in Mongolia. The air battle scenes were great. It was of course the evil Mongols that caused worldwide chaos.
How about the 'Don Winslow' serials, where this naval hero kept the Nazis at bay.
You must remember these
'The Giant Claw' featured one of the first flying monsters. It came out even before 'Rodan', a Japanese made film that was a part of the Godzilla adventure. It was a response from screen writers to the ghastly effects of atom bomb fallout which threatened all creatures on earth.
Ants became huge and attacked the Southwest and Los Angeles. The movie was simply titled 'Them'. California was a popular setting for so many movies, being just a scream and a shriek away.
Perhaps you saw 'The Angry Red Planet', 'It Came from Beneath the Sea' or 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. The latter one starred Michael Rennie as 'Klaatu', the alien who came to earth to deliver a message of warning. They could no longer allow the human race to go on with nuclear experiments. Like the stupid earthlings we are (comparatively speaking), we didn't listen and were put to the test by the most impressive robot in film history, the giant Gort. The tin man had a melting ray instead of eyes, and no one was safe. Finally, we gave in and our 'friends' from out there in space returned home, satisfied that all would be well.
H. G. Wells' 'The war of the worlds' came from a 1898 novel by Wells. It was set in California, as were many sci-fi flicks. It was here that we first appreciated the strings of bacteria that our bodies have become resistant to. Not so fortunate for the slimy, multi-appendaged Martians. Their invincible flying machines all crashed - saving  the earth from total annihilation.
Although the 'Creature' features involved no aliens, we wonder how a mix-up in science could create this half-man, half-fish. There were actually three films, 'The Creature From the Black Lagoon', 'Revenge of the Creature' and another one where he is turned loose in Miami to live with humanity. As usual, we humans screwed that up too.
'Invaders From Mars' was a juvenile story about one boy's dream, and about how the young star and his teacher got rid of the creatures that assumed human shapes. It was in another movie that 'pods' took over a lot of bodies. Do you remember the 'Body Snatchers'?
Of all movies, I have watched a rather obscure one called "The 27th Day" more times than any other. There's something special to this one. Human abductees are mysteriously whisked away, then returned with a special bottle for each of the earthlings, one an American, one a Russian, one a Brit, one a Chinese and the other from some other part of the world. The bottles were some kind of weapon, and every government wanted to have it. It was the very best weapon I've ever heard of. It worked like this: The holder of the egg-like weapon used his or her thoughts to open it. Then, the coordinates of any location (Longitude-Latitude) were spoken, and surprisingly all of the evil people within a 1000 mile radius of those coordinates were vaporized. No bombs, no blood. Boy, would I like to see one of those now. Goodbye war mongers, goodbye tax collectors, goodbye to most politicians and goodbye to a certain Denny's restaurant. How would you use it? Imagine the gall of these 'aliens' telling us to behave or be killed.
Movies about science-fiction are still made today, and for the most part they are bloody, gory and without any redeeming values. Just nature going berserk.
Movies that I still would like to see are 'UFO' and 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars'. Several years ago there was a film company that would transfer the 35 mm films to video, but they started at $150. So, I guess I can forget it.
What is your favorite sci-fi movie? That is, from the 50's or early 60's.
The Giant Claw terrorized the Quebec, Canada wilderness, then New York City as it defied man's most magnificent weapons of destruction - only to be destroyed by another science genius with a matter, anti-matter machine that uncloaked the flying beast from hell.
See you next time in Tales from the Side of the Road.
